The words playing and cooking don’t often go together. For most people cooking is stressful, a chore, born out of necessity and for some, even a nightmare. But like anything we do in life, whether it’s learning to ride a bike, a new game or sport; they all take time to learn. Once we get good, that’s when we can start to play, have fun and enjoy ourselves.
5 tips to get you cooking from a novice to a pro!
1. Start with easy recipes.
I like to use recipe books that I love. Yes, there are a ton of recipes on the web, but a lot of them don’t necessarily work. Read the whole recipe; visualize yourself cooking it as you read the recipe. You don’t want to be in the midst of cooking and rushing to refer back to the recipe with dirty hands.
2. Develop your knife skills.
Use a sharp knife, you will enjoy cooking a whole lot more, it will take less effort and energy to cut and is a whole lot safer than using a blunt knife. You only need 1 or 2 good knives and a sharpener. Practice holding the knife properly and work on a slicing motion when cutting.
3. Practice, practice and persevere.
We learn more from our mistakes if something doesn’t work out this time round I’m sure next time it can only be better. Practice your knife skills, be safe and start slowly but you’ll get faster over time. Practice your frying, baking, sautéing and other cooking skills. Learn and discover about different foods available in Asia. Explore your local wet market and discover hidden gems.
4. Choosing the right recipe.
Start with what you love to eat, if it’s steak, get obsessed with cooking the perfect steak. If it’s pasta – learn everything about pasta. Have fun with the discovery of food and cuisine. Explore and embark on your own culinary journey.
5. Build your confidence.
We’ve all heard the saying, “fake it till you make it,” and part of the cooking process is having a bit of confidence that you are making great food for loved ones!
Even if you don’t feel that it’s the best food you’ve made, be proud of having a crack at it!
Despite the daily rush of life, a meal brings the family or friends together. It’s the best part of the day when you can strength bonds and communications with those you care about.
